While Viljo and Catarina were working on building the orphanage, they still had to do a lot of fundraising and PR work. So they met with lots of people over lunches and dinners to get the word out about what they were doing. One of the guys that seemed the most sincerely interested was Daniel Völl. He lived in Willow Creek with his wife Annika, his teenage daughter Brigitte and his kid son Kevin.
Somehow he seemed to like Catarina. He invited her out and wanted to know all there was to know about the project.
Catarina was happy to have found someone as inspired by the idea as she was. And Viljo liked him as well. When Cleo, one of the cats, got sick, he went to the Brindleton Bay vet clinic with her and met Daniel who was working there as a doctor.
So after a lot of getting to know each other and talking about the plans, Daniel decided he wanted to become a part of the project, including quitting his job and moving into the staff quarters. Catarina and Viljo were thrilled. They liked the guy. He was trained in medicine, which could be useful in case of an emergency, and he was the only one among the three of them with actual experience in raising kids. So they agreed enthusiastically.
Of course they had also been hoping for a hefty donation from Daniel's part seeing as how he was a doctor living in the fancy part of Willow Creek. That wasn't going to happen though. Daniel left his house and all his money to his wife and the kids when he moved out because he didn't want to have his decisions make an impact on their lifestyle. Of course Annika, his wife, wasn't liking this development at all. She was only a waitress and without her husband's income, maintaining that lifestyle wasn't as easy as Daniel had imagined. They began to fight over this a lot. Although the kids came to visit at the orphanage and Daniel went over to his family's place for dinners, it wasn't the same after he moved out.
So one evening, the inevitable happened. When Annika came over to talk about things one more time, Daniel realized that it didn't make any sense to try anymore. He had to make a decision between the orphanage and his family and he knew deep down that this was bigger than his own happiness. So he told Annika he wanted to get a divorce. She was shocked but finally agreed that it would be for the best.
